Wedding Travel, Kennan DeWitt

As the three energetic children scaled the car seats to find their places in the highway hotrod, we filled cargo to capacity. The cats and fish were fed and the house secured. The weather was sunny and windy, an ideal travel day. She drove the first shift and I read. I drove and she read to me from her latest novel intrigue. Three hours flew by and we were headed for the pool. The almost 3 year olds quickly developed a healthy dread of the water, but then splashed about in their floaties. Our 6 year old could not be contained and practiced the front crawl, or front paddle. The chlorine was pugent and the youngsters shivered. Dinner was fabulous mexican nearby. A plastic ball game in the hotel was the evening highlight. The kids slept soundly.

Finding Meaning, Kennan DeWitt

Dear Friends: Finding meaning in one's therapeutic work with clients on a daily basis can be challenging. Beyond the technical content of what a client reveals is the richer meaning of their experience. Reflective and active listening skills are essential. Attention to a client's non-verbal signs is instructive. Listening often requires not talking despite impulse to the contrary. Their "richer meaning" can be gleaned from their story or narrative, which is neither right nor wrong. One's perspective is not tested for accuracy, but may be open to adjustment. Placing ourselves in the client's shoes lends appreciation of their experience. Accurate reflection and genuine empathy form a connection with our client and the foundation for therapeutic change

Kids on Saturday, Kennan DeWitt, Attorney

Saturday with the kids was eventful. We went to Tim's for coffee and bagels. We plannned the day over breakfast, our daily routine. We played in the yard and livingroom. A smooth transition into nap time. The rain began to threaten, but gardening awaited. The veggies were all green and too small to harvest. They continue to thrive. The kids did not mind the clouds.

Look Inward, Kennan M. DeWitt

A wise philosopher therapist once said (loosely translated): "Do not project onto others that which you grapple with in your own life and relationships. Instead look within for the source of your pain. Do not pass judgment upon she whom you do not understand. Do not presume to know the truth, it is often otherwise." All is well in the world. Good day.

Friends: Visiting Mom at the nursing home was pleasant, but sad. Her stay should be brief. The kids ran through the hall in search of grandma. She had just ordered her lunch in the fancy dining room. We decided to grab lunch and come back. We sat on the swing in the patio and shared with her pictures of our latest trip. She was brightened by our visit, especially the kids, but lasted only 30 minutes. Her greatest measure of wellness is her sense of humor, which was plentiful. We said goodbye after planning a Sunday outing to Sunday Mass at St. Mary's and lunch in Royal Oak.

Friends: Those who are truly your friends will always be your friends. Those who were not generally show their true colors when you need their support.

Friends: Today was a good day for two reasons. First, I had lunch with a colleague and friend who reminded me why I became an attorney and mental health advocate. Second, I acquired an additional professional credential that will open some doors and enable me to provide additional human services to my clients.

Kennan DeWitt, Visualization

Therapeutic visualization can be forward looking or backward re-storying. In looking forward, we can imagine and experience the goal or progress toward the goal. For example, a year from now, I will be advanced in my career, or have 8 more friends, or have a better relationship with a, b or c. If you can see yourself there, you can be there.

In backward re-storying, we may experience an event in a less traumatic or more positive frame of mind, or identify some positive aspect of the experience or silverlining.

Kennan DeWitt, visualization

Friends: If you can see it, you can do it. If you can imagine yourself being somewhere, doing something, reaching a goal, short or long term, then you can arrive there. Close your eyes......, now imagine being there....., look around....., how does it feel?...., who else might be there?....., what are your thoughts?, what else are you experiencing? Now, open your eyes and ask, what do I have to do today, right now, to start in that direction?

Kennan DeWitt, Grandpa's

Dear Blog: We had a great trip to grandpa's this past Sunday. After church, we caught a light lunch and drove to grandpa's while they slept. Grandpa cooks well and we enjoy sharing dinner with him. He says our company is therapy for him, not sure why. Anyway, we had dinner, taught the youngest to ride a bike, cleaned house and relaxed outside watering flowers. A great way to spend Sunday. It was a nice trip home as well, not too late.

We had a great family outing in the back yard. We re-planted some vegetable plants to allow for expansion. The kids ran around the yard with water bottles and wanted to help in whatever way. They also rode their bikes into the bushes and whined at each other. Nice memory, let's do it again tomorrow.

Dear Blog: Spent some time with my high school aged son at a local restaurant. He was anticipating summer recess and what he will do with his time. I remember 30 years ago or so getting lost in the thought of summer, sleeping in, staying up half the night, a late night burger run, fire works in the park and softball in a large parking lot. My son has similar images of no regular hours, endless carpentry projects, weightlifting, and cruising around in that jeep with the loud bass speakers. As I listened to him, I smiled as that familiar, joyful and unlimited feeling of summer came back.

Dear Blog:
I started reading Julia Cameron's, "The Right to Write"(Putnam, 1998) just for some inspiration. I enjoy writing because it keeps me grounded, in touch with my thoughts and feelings, and for the sheer recreation. I enjoy reading, writing and speaking equally, but have done very little of the first two lately. Well, there's the blog. I will keep you updated about any new found inspiration from the book. And, I will keep reading, writing and speaking.

kennan dewitt, stress reduction

Dear Blog:
Twenty minutes of exercise is an excellent way to reduce stress. Somehow those worries seem less troublesome once the heart rate increases, the blood circulates and the endorphins flow. Today I walked a forest trail, sunk my tennis shoes in the mud and crossed wooden bridges. A slight breeze landed green leaves on the trail and the sun poked through and dried the high ground mud. The trail diverted in many directions, my path dead-ended and I navigated out. Exercise definitely improves my perspective.

kennan dewitt, thought diffusing

Those repeating negative thoughts that intrude into one's daily life. A symbol, a reminder, a flash, a traumatic re-experience. Usual responses are ignoring, angering, fearing, denying, busying, or continuing through a pointless path of emotional pain. Thought Diffusing involves acknowledging the realty of what is, without necessarily agreeing with or believing the realty is fair or appropriate. For example, saying to oneself "that's true, I accept that, " or "In spite of that, I'm okay," or just "yep, moving forward"," or it's beyond my control." Just a thought...

Brainstorming the meaning of "self -care."

Self-care begins with answering the question: What do I need to do right now, right at this moment, to take care of myself, physically, emotionally, spiritually? A nap, a snack, a break, turning off the noise, listening rather than talking, walking rather than running, accepting rather than fuming, whatever...
